Rhythm

There is something innately within us that loves rhythm and routine.  Consistency brings order to the chaos of life.  I try and try and try to be consistent, but mostly I am consistently inconsistent because life with lots of little people is anything but static.  Our family has loved the rhythm and routine of coming to California each summer since we have moved away.  For the first few years we came for the entire summer and stayed at our little beach house in Huntington.  Since we have sold that we have shifted to staying at my parents’ home with occasional stays at the Marriott Villas in Newport.  Through the last few years the time spent in Orange County has dwindled from the entire summer to less than 3 weeks this year.  Life has just carved its way in and the kids’ summers are filled with wonderful camps and activities that take precedent.  Taylor doesn’t even get to come to the beach this summer because he is too full with too many other wonderful activities.  (Mandarin camp at BYU being his primary distraction this summer, while we are soaking up the sun in Huntington.)

When we are here in California the kids love the rhythm and rituals that come with California-

This year we went back to our old HB ritual of watching fireworks on the sand and the kids loved it.  Jake and Mike added the HB 5K on 4th of July morning and they are convinced this needs to be part of the future Fourth of July flow.

We enjoyed our rituals and routines even if they were action packed in a couple weeks instead of lazily being spread out over weeks of summer.
