“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately. . . . and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life….”-Thoreau
In an effort to pare down life to its simplest terms and truly live, I am packing my kids into a van (with 7 outfits each…..ok, not quite as simple as Thoreau, but I only want to stop once a week for laundry) and heading across the country. Life is so full ALL THE TIME. Somehow my way of sucking out all the marrow of life is to live each day so fully and completely that there is no space left. Mike always laughs that I am trying to squeeze 9 lives out of my one. I just don’t want to miss it. I don’t want to miss a beautiful opportunity for one of the kids, or a perfect sunrise on a walk with a friend, or a chance to lift a wounded soul, or a moment to read a bedtime story, or the chance to travel to another amazing destination. In FULLY LIVING I become exhausted and forget to take time to breathe. I’m not sure that packing myself and 4 kids (5 for the short time we have Jake) into a car for thousands upon thousands of miles is the best way to simplify, but we are going for it. We are going to immerse ourself in church history, in Joseph Smith and the early Saints. We are going to memorize scriptures and read great books. We are hoping to visit 18 more National Parks (that will make 20/61 on our quest to see all the National Parks) and spend hours outside awakening our souls to the wonder of nature. We are going to read your letters and pray with specifics for you and your “friends”. We are going to make a Herculean effort to have no contention between siblings but to have a family where love and happiness abounds. We are going to SEEK PEACE. We are going to learn American History-about Washington and Lincoln, Franklin and Jefferson. We will stand in the footsteps of giants and hopefully lengthen our own strides. We are going to live deeply and suck out all the marrow of life. We will pray for you on your adventure. Pray for us.
